The Ankara Kediri (Turkish Angora) breed of domestic cat is one of the older, naturally-occurring breeds. It originated in the Ankara region of central Turkey. They are descended from the African wildcat, like all other domestic cats. Their coats are mostly white, medium length, and silky in texture with no undercoat over a fine bone structure. They require little grooming, but using a fine-toothed comb once or twice a week is recommended to keep their fur and skin healthy. They lose some fur during the summer, and more grooming is needed to prevent matting and hairballs. In winter their coat fills out and is extremely soft. It protects against harsh winter weather such as they would have endured in central Turkey. The beautiful and rare Turkish Angora cats are one of the most social and affectionate of the cat breeds. Originally known for their white fur that seemed to shimmer. However, currently black, reddish, blue, tabby, white tabby and smoke varieties also appear and are accepted. Breeders who used to prefer the white cats are now happily breeding the various colors. Turkish Angoras also appear in pointed, lavender, and cinnamon which indicate out-breeding and are not for show. It was not until 1978 that colors other than white were accepted for show. All these cats registered by CFA must trace their ancestry back to Turkey.Their eyes may be amber, blue, green or even combinations of one blue and the other amber or green. The genetics that produce the white coat and blue eye is related closely to their hearing ability, and may indicate deafness on the side of the blue eye. Many of the blue or mixed-eye white cats hear normally, and even if the cats are deaf they can live long, normal lives if kept indoors.Intelligent, adaptable, playful, and loving which makes them excellent pets for families, even with young children, and also entertaining friends for seniors. They love company; other cats and dogs are perfectly acceptable, but your Turkish Angora will want to be “top dog” in whichever configuration your house has.Like the country they come from, Turkish Angoras are extremely hospitable to visitors, greeting guests at the door. They will take over a gathering or party, checking everyone out and “speaking” with every individual personally, encouraging petting and making lap space. They are truly beautiful cats that will enhance anyone’s life. ![]() Purebred Cat Breed Rescue website supports responsible purebred rescue efforts for Turkish Angoras.
